Ride from Monterey to Castroville

33.8 Miles

This is my basic trip from Monterey to Castroville.   I was really helped by the tailwind going to Castroville.  I was wondering why I was cruising at 20+MPH.  Of course, on the way back, I had a small challenge of riding into the wind.  Weather was sunny and the legs felt good.

GPS Tracking using Sportypal

Hey everyone!

I picked up a new phone last month.  It is the Sony Aino.

I was looking for cool apps and came across SportyPal.  It is basically a GPS app that tracks your runs, walks, and cycling trips.  The user interface is very basic and easy to navigate.  I just tested out the app these past 2 days and so for so good!

You start the app and create a new workout.  The GPS is then activated and you are good to go.  Press start and enjoy your workout.  When you are done, you stop the workout on the SportyPal app.  It then asks if you want to upload the data to your account.  When you upload your data, you can analyze your trip online.  It tracks your route using google maps.

The app I used is the standard Java app.  There is also a SportyPal app for IPhone.

I will keep you updated with my routes via SportyPal.

Benicia to Pleasant Hill!

25 miles

This was my first ride over the Benicia Bridge since it opened. I started my trip at the Benicia Raleys on Southampton Dr. We got on the bridge by turning left near the end of W Military st. I had to guess on how to get into Pleasant Hill from Martinez. I ended up going through Alhambra St. rather than Pacheco. Alhambra has a lot of hills, but are rewarding with a long downhill areas. So far, it was a good ride with medium traffic.

Bicycle Performance by Wiki

Bike Performance

I came across this article while researching for a new wheelset.  I am debating to buy a new bike or just get a new wheelset to make my bike lighter.

"The advantage of light bikes, and particularly light wheels, from a KE standpoint is that KE only comes into play when speed changes, and there are certainly two cases where lighter wheels should have an advantage: sprints, and corner jumps in a criterium" - Wiki

My local LOOP

I finally took my bike out for my first good ride of the season.  I decided to try the loop that I had planned over winter.  It was a steady ride with minimal hills.  I was able to keep a good 16-18 mph the whole way.  I first did one lap, but decided to go two more afterwards.

Monterey Sea Otter Classic - April 15-18, 2010

There's a local bike tour in Central California! They have set it up for certain lengths. Go check it out and sign up!

SEA OTTER CLASSIC - MONTEREY, CA

Picked up a new trainer!

So I sold my Bell Trainer because I thought it was just too loud. Plus it has some vibrations when I rode on it. I went around SF's mission district and roamed around. I checked out a couple thrift stores for some books and trinkets.   But I ended up finding a GREAT DEAL! It was too cheap to mention.  But here it is:

The Minoura Mag 500

This trainer is pretty sweet and lightweight. I have rode on it for an hour and felt it did the job.  The resistance knob is located in the tire drive.  So I have to manually get off the trainer to switch resistance.  But of course, I could just switch gears.

So for you cyclists out there, go to thrift stores and find some good stuff!
